Dear Friends,

You are my last hope, I cannot find a single link or any advice on my topic. I need information how to construct a vivarium for tropical plants. I would like to grow sensitive tropical plants, like Alocasia, Dieffenbachia, Marantha, Ctenanthe, Aglaonema, etc in my room, under artifical light, termostat regulated temperature and controlled moisture.
I would like to create a vivarium from glass and use hydroculture. Nobody can help, no literature in Hungary. Almost nobody knows about hydroculture. My goal is to establish a system with the least possible care, in order to offer my system to doctors for their waiting rooms, hospitals, hotels, restaurants, etc.

Can you help me? Do you have any literature or advice about this? Do you know any link on the Internet, anybody who is an owner of a well-working vivarium?

Please, answer me if you can.

Greetings: Andras Eszlinger from Hungary

Im Shop sind gute Bücher!
Hello Andreas!

Best I would use a tank which is normally made to keep and breed reptiles. There are many pages concerning this topic and you can easily buy a complete tank, so that for the beginning you do not have to care so much about working with glass. I would not use any other materials. Humidity will destroy them fast.
If the tank is closed, humidity will stay high, only because of the water of hydoculture inside.
Temperature is easy. Depending of the size of the tank place one or more plant-spots on the top.
You will need to use extra neon-tubes to get enough light for the plants to grow. Use Daylight tubes or special tubes for plants.
For heating the ground, there are special hydoculture heater (warter resistent foils that can be placed on the ground of the tank). But do not heat the ground to much. Do not try to control air temperature with heat from the ground. Use spots.

The main probem will be condensed water. If humidity is higt water will condense at the front door and you can't look into the tank any more. You have to use a tank which lets fresh air in under the front door and lets it out on the top of back side. If tere is still condensed water on the door, you have to install a fan (e.g. like those, used to cool down your PC).

Good luck!
Björn
